Hi beauties. Welcome to week two of our Wellness Wednesday series. This week, we’re chatting postpartum hair thinning - a super common concern among new moms. Because come on… caring for a newborn, healing our sore bodies, and operating on very little sleep isn’t enough to deal with right?
Since a few of our readers mentioned this was a concern for them, I was super excited to sit down with Dr. Laura Belus to discuss what we can do about it - here’s what she had to say.
“Although the main reason for postpartum hair thinning is due to a sharp drop in estrogen after giving birth, there are things women can do to prevent or minimize the hair loss.

Second, keep your protein up! Hair is made up of 90% protein so making sure you’re including healthy, lean sources of protein at every meal is vital. Some of favourite (simple) sources are: vegan protein powder, quinoa, organic eggs & pumpkin seeds.
Lastly- nourish your hair & scalp. I see so many women in my practice with hair loss and they become very afraid of brushing or washing their hair. We need to boost circulation to the scalp to promote new hair growth so even a gentle scalp massage in the evening before bed is a great way to improve blood flow. And of course, no chemicals on the scalp! Using clean hair products can reduce irritation and better hydrate the scalp & hair follicles, what you use on your hair should be safe enough for your baby! "
This is inline with our philosophy here at Lines of Elan. Our products are safe for the entire family, and our Eucalyptus Mint collection of natural + organic hair care, Truly Clean Karma Bean, can stimulate the scalp and help promote circulation, naturally.
This line is great because the natural + organic formula is incredibly mild with a PH level that supports healthy scalp, and won't weigh down your hair, says Laura Craig, Co-Founder and Formulator at Lines of Elan.
In addition to a gentle, plant-based hair care line, coconut oil and apple cider vinegar are two more amazing all natural treatments for scalp and hair health that you probably have kicking around the house.
An Apple Cider Vinegar rinse is packed with B vitamins, vitamin C and potassium to help to maintain a natural PH balance. It’s also an antibacterial and anti-fungal powerhouse, helping to clarify the scalp, which stimulates hair growth by treating the clogged hair follicles.
How to use:
Dilute raw, unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with some water (we use 1:1 ratio) and apply directly to your scalp. A quick scalp massage is all you need for this treatment and rinse out. Note: take caution not to get the solution in your eyes.
Coconut oil is another great option for boosting hair growth, and shares a lot of the great follicle stimulating properties of Apple Cider Vinegar. Coconut Oil is rich in Potassium, Vitamin E, and Iron - so with a little massaging, it can improve blood circulation to the scalp, rejuvenate dead hair cells, protect the hair shaft and prevent further breakage.
How to use:
Massage Coconut Oil into your scalp and let sit for at least 10 minutes, or try it as an overnight mask! We suggest covering your pillow with a towel to prevent any oil from staining your fav pillow case.
So great news mama’s - with some diet tweaks, vitamins and weekly scalp massages with a natural plant-based product, like our Truly Clean Karma Bean, you can help your body to regain balance and begin to regulate hormone levels and enjoy some you time in the process.
As always, we'd love to hear your comments on this post as well as your suggestions on future content.
Be beaut(eco)ful,
Sarah
